Olive Oil and Diabetes

Olive Oil and Diabetes

Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been linked to the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.

Today we are going to dive into the facts and see how olive oil can help diabetics increase the quality of their life and share a few interesting olive oil recipes to inspire you!

THE STUDIES

Controlled trials and studies examined the effect of olive oil as a supplement on blood glucose among diabetics, aiming to test the effect of daily consumption of 30 ml of extra-virgin olive oil on HbA1c among patients with type 2 diabetes.

Patients who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, were given a daily dose of olive oil and then followed, studied, and evaluated the results compared to patients who haven’t enriched their daily diet with the oil.

The results suggested that the highest olive oil intake category of patients showed a 16% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes compared to the group with the lowest.

Numerous studies are showing consistently that replacing carbohydrates (approximately 5–10% of total energy intake) in general with high-quality olive oil as a specific dietary compound has beneficial effects on metabolic risk factors in type 2 diabetes patients.

HOW IT WORKS

Olives contain oleuropein, a compound that sends a signal to the pancreas to release insulin. Which in turn is helping regulate your blood sugar levels and metabolism. Extra virgin olive oil may improve insulin secretion and promote glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients.

In addition to that, extra virgin olive oil contains significant amounts of micronutrients such as polyphenolic compounds that may positively influence the metabolic status.

Then we have the all mighty antioxidants that can help to reduce the risk of the complications of diabetes, including diabetic neuropathy, retinal neuropathy, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Antioxidants can help diminish the damage that is due to the oxidative stress caused by high levels of sugar in the blood.

Moreover, due to its effect on cholesterol, olive oil prevents a series of diseases that are very frequent in diabetic patients. Olive oil-based diet helps in preventing insulin resistance and possible pernicious implications by raising HDL (high-density lipoproteins) and lowering triglycerides, thus allowing diabetes patients to have better control of blood sugar and blood pressure.
